Where Imagination Comes Alive

The Formidable Sight

He didn’t look up when she walked to him. She quietly sat near him. As a few moments went by, he spoke in a very low tone, “Are the children asleep?”
“Ummhmmm..”, she nodded with a sound as if to say yes.
“Did they sleep hungry?”
“No, a little was left from yesterday, I fed it to them. But it wasn’t enough.”
He didn’t reply to question his wife didn’t ask but he knew she wanted to.
After a pause of few moments which seemed like hours for them in this uneasy silence, she spoke apprehensively, “What’s the matter? Is everything alright? You haven’t left the place since yesterday. You didn’t eat anything. What happened? Tell me, what happened out there?”
He has never behaved like this ever before. His weird behavior worried his wife.
He didn’t know what to tell her. He had decided not to worry his wife and keep the things to himself, but he wasn’t able to hide it well. He could not put on the facade anymore. After her persistent questioning, he decided to confide her in.
“Don’t let the children go out to play. It’s not safe anymore.”
“Why?” Her husband was not making any sense.
“They are coming for us. I don’t think we have much time left. Either we should run away or we should die!”
“But there isn’t any place to run away. And we can’t let go of this place we call our home.”
“There won’t be any home, there won’t be any food. There will be no life. They are going to destroy our very home in front of our eyes and will kill us too! ” he shouted to vent out the pain of his heart.
“Everyone here is afraid of us. Since ages we are known to rule the Jungles. We are the ferocious tigers. Whosoever they are and wherever they belong to, we will slay them. We won’t let them destroy everything”, she said, the anger of his words filling her heart too.
He spoke again, controlling his anger, “I can’t get the image out of my head. I saw them bringing big machines that clears whole land in one go. What chance do you think we have against them? Along with evil motives, they possess deadly weapons.”
“Who are they?” she asked, visibly scared.
“They can do anything, whether it’s us or our fellow beings. They are the humans from the far-away cities. ”

Where Art Thou?

In the darkness of night,
I looked for you here and there…
But you were hidden beyond my sight,
And I couldn’t find you anywhere.

When I missed you so much,
And I felt so alone..
I had no one to my company,
Except a chocolate ice cream cone!

They took you to a place,
Far away from me..
I wanted you unlocked,
But couldn’t find the key!

I wish I could do anything,
To save you my ally..
May be I could hunger strike,
Or walk a protest rally.

My mind is full of questions,
What went wrong and how…
Answer me, dearest Maggi,
Why you hide and where art thou??

On the occasion of Friendship Day, this poem may sound a bit strange but hold on, isn’t a month ago Maggi was one of our dearest friends. So isn’t it only apt that today we might miss it a bit more than any other day. I know, the logic seems to be weird enough to be not considered. But wait a minute and give it a little thought, over the years it (Maggi) has been an indispensable part of any Friendship! It helped strangers to form a bond! It was a saviour in loneliness to some just like chocolates and icecreams are to some! So why not a little tribute to the friendship that has been lost! 😉  Anyways, that was my way of reminiscing all the memories of friendship over the years, and Maggi was surely a big part of it!

The Unpayable Debt

She sat on the lone chair by the lake. This was her escape whenever life went out of her hands. Today was one such day. But the day wasn’t a sad one but a happy one. It was her only daughter’s wedding day. In between the hustle and bustle of the wedding, emotions that were hidden deep inside, seeped out of her heart to her eyes.
Memories are strange, they take you on a flashback ride when you least expect it. Sometimes you can escape it but most times you can’t. Had Karan been alive, he would have been so happy, she thought. She glanced into oblivion. She could hear him say from above, you did it well my darling, just stay strong for our daughter like always. She smiled.
“Mom!! I knew I would find you here. Come let’s go! Everybody is looking for you! You have to be present at all the ceremonies.”
Riya got up, wiping off her tears.
“Mom, why are you crying?”
“Umm..”, she fumbled for the words but she couldn’t lie to her daughter.
” I know mom, I miss him too. But like always, I believe he is here with us”, said Sanchi, pointing towards her heart. She then pulled her mother into a tight embrace. Riya smiled again.
“Remember to get all the packing done until we get back”, Sanchi ordered.
” Huh??” Riya had never spoken about the fears and struggles she faced as a single mother to give Sanchi the best of everything. But her daughter had always understood what she had never mentioned. Now she was scared of her life ahead. With Sanchi gone, she feared loneliness would be knocking her doors.
“I know what you are thinking mom. You will be staying with us after we return from our honeymoon”, said Sanchi as they walked towards their home.
Rita shook her head. This has been a topic of argument between the two ever since the marriage was fixed but none of the two hasn’t resigned yet.
” Mom, I am not hearing no to this. You don’t have to stay alone. You have done so much for me, now it’s my turn. It’s a debt i can never repay. You will stay with us and that’s final” , Sanchi concluded with a tone of finality in her voice. Riya knew she had to give in. Her daughter had read her mind yet again.

Her Sacrifice

Behind her she heard screaming, the cry of a baby and it tore her heart apart. All she wanted to do was to turn around and take that baby in her arms. But she knew she couldn’t, she knew she will never see that face again.

He isn’t your son anymore, he is theirs! Their only heir!“, she tried explaining herself. She hid the money and rushed home. The waves were hitting the seashore to protest and a lone cloud was crying at a mother’s sacrifice while everyone was waiting for her to pay the fees for her brother’s operation.

The Smile

A rough loud voice broke my slumber. I couldn’t guess what was going on but was certainly sure that whatever it was, it wasn’t right at all.
“Do you have any money to waste on it?”, said that loud voice. The voice was full of contempt.
The other person, the weaker one, who was holding me shook my head in negative. He let out a sigh and out came the puff of smoke from his mouth.
” Tell me? Why are you standing like a fool? Answer me!”, the loud voice shrieked in anger again.
A few moments later, I was lying on the ground and the two men had left. There wasn’t a single soul to be seen. The unpleasant smell of the trash around didn’t let me breathe. Few minutes, may be hours or even days went by and I was still there, unattended.
“Hey look!”, I heard someone say. In faint light I could see that the voice belonged to a frail woman.
With trembling hands she picked me up. But these hands were sure stronger than the ones that had put me down. There was love and warmth in her eyes unlike the cold stares of those men.
” Let’s go home, baby girl”, I heard her say and I knew I can trust this stranger. I smiled for the first time in my life.
